Basic nutritional rules for drivers

Breaded pork chop with fat sauce with the addition of cream and tomato soup, boiled on fat stock and complemented with cream, will lead you straight to heart attack. This kind of food is rich in animal fat that increases blood cholesterol levels, especially of the bad one, which is one of the direct causes of circulatory system diseases. These diseases are responsible for heart attacks in so many truck drivers. To avoid the risk, you need to know what to prepare and how to do it so you can keep it for a couple of days in your truck refrigerator and still enjoy the taste of your meal. One should reduce the amount of highly processed food to a minimum and focus on simple products like potatoes, cheese, bread, loads of vegetable and fruit and drink lots of water.

Check some basic nutritional rules for drivers:

Breakfast is the energy boost for the whole day

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Healthy and nutritional one will provide your body with a solid portion of energy for a long time. Eat wholemeal bread, lean cured meat, dairy and vegetables. If you are fed up with sandwiches, choose oatmeal, spelt flakes and muesli with mixed dried fruit and nuts with milk or yoghurt. Fruits, like banana and apples, are also a good addition.

Don't eat in excess

The basic mistake is eating in excess. It is a very bad habit as overeating causes sleepiness which in turn slows down your reflex and increases response time. So don't eat in excess as it hinders concentration! A break is recommended very 4 hours not only for you stomach but also for your back and brain, which needs oxygen. Apart from using the break for a meal, you should also stretch and do some exercise.

STOP to fat food and fastfood

After couple hours of driving, hunger starts haunting you and you are ready to eat anything. Of course, the best choice would be a meal prepared at home, transported in special boxes, stored in the truck fridge. If you don't have it, and you have no choice but to eat fast food or in a roadside bar, choose meat with loads of vegetables, without creamy sauces. It is a good idea to have snack stick sausages with you, eggs boiled at home or to simply eat a sandwich with meat roasted at home.

Vegetables and fruit as snacks

Sugar in the form of glucose is very important for brain functioning. Of course, this concerns only the natural sugar contained in fruit. Apples or bananas, which are a rich source of potassium, are the best snacks. A healthy treat will not cause you to gain on weight but you will provide your body with lots of vitamins and minerals. Apart from fruit and vegetables, eat dried fruit and nuts, e.g. walnuts, almonds or cashew nuts.
